OFC Nations Cup

The OFC Nations Cup is an international tournament, played between the countries that make Oceania region. The members of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) play matches against each other. The first tournament was scheduled in the year 1996 and the competition used to be held in every two years up to 2004. At present, it is conducted in every four years. The two most successful teams in the tournament are Australia and New Zealand. But in 2002, Tahiti became the first team to break the streak of becoming an Oceania Champion other than Australia and New Zealand. Currently, eight teams participate in the event.

The tournament started off in 1973 by the name of "Oceania Cup". The first match was held in New Zealand. It took place without any qualifying round and was won by the host in the final match played in Auckland and Tahiti, which Auckland won with a scoreline of 2-0. The first two editions were played without any qualifying rounds. For the consecutive three tournaments, Australia and New Zealand have seeded into the tournament automatically, while the remaining ten nations played to qualify. The other ten countries had to go through a round-robin format to be eligible for the competition. In 2004, the format was again altered, returning to the old formats. In 2008, the format was changed again. The qualification tournament was designated to the previous year’s South Pacific Games football tournament.
