The objective of introduction of such games is to strengthen Islamic solidarity, the bond of amity and brotherhood among youths in member states.

The Islamic Solidarity Games is an Olympic-style regional multi-sport event, held after a gap of every four years in the year following the Olympic Games. The events are organized by the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF), which is also responsible for the control and direction of such events. Saudi Arabia hosted the first event in the year 2005 where athletes from around 50 nations participated.

Women's Islamic Games

Islamic Federation of Women's Sport (IFWS) also conducts a special International event for female Muslim athletes from all around the world. The first event was organized in 1993. Since then, it has been conducted four times (as of 2017). The main aim of these Games is to inspire Muslim women to participate in world level sports competitions. Woman athletes from around 25 nations participate in these Games.

Competition Format

Athletes (Men & Women) from member nations of the Organization of the Islamic Conference are allowed to participate in the event. Non-Muslim citizens in the member nations are also permissible to participate in the Games provided they had completed three-year citizenship in the member nations.
No age limit has been prescribed for athletes participating in the I.S.G., other than those prescribed for health reasons by the International Federation's Rules of each sport.
The charter of Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation describes competition in 14 mandatory sports categories.
Athletes from a minimum of eight countries must participate to have the event conducted. However, if fewer athletes arrive, the competition may still be continued with minimum six competitors without medals being awarded to the winners.
To participate in Women's Islamic Games, female athletes have to wear protective gears and clothing as per Islamic rules.
