The first competition, held after the re-establishment was won by the German Association Football Club, Rot-Weiss Essen.

The DFB-Pokal or the German Cup is an annual German Football Cup, the second most important German football club title after the Bundesliga Championship where 64 teams participate in the game, fighting for the cup. Initially, the competition was founded in 1935, titled as Tshchammer Pokal that was stopped in the year of 1944 due to the decline of Nazi Germany. The World War II also influenced the competition to be disbanded. In 1952, the game was resumed as DFB-Pokal. The German Cup was conducted by the German Football Association (DFB). The game commences in August every year and continues until June.

Competition Format

The competition commences with 64 teams.
The top finishers (four) of 3.Liga along with the 36 teams of Bundesliga & 2.Bundesliga are sent for the tournament as qualified teams. Out of the remaining teams, 21 slots are given to the cup winners of Verbandspokale, the Regional Football Association while the last three slots are given to the three regional associations.
The pairing of the teams is done by promotion into two pots, or in other words, one pot (group) has all the amateur teams who have just been promoted while on the other hand, the other pot has teams who have just not been promoted. Hence, during the first round of the competition, each professional team plays against an amateur team. For the next round, there is a division of pots, by the results of the previous round. In this round, the amateur team paired off with the professional teams, until one pot is empty.
If the scoreboard shows equal level, extra minutes are given for the game with a penalty shootout (if needed).
