The first official Olympiad was held in London in the year 1927.

The Chess Olympiad is an international level chess tournament, organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE). It is held in every two years at the city chosen by FIDE. The first Olympiad unofficially took place while the 1924 Summer Olympics was held in Paris, France. On 20th July of the same year (which was the closing day of the Olympiad), FIDE was established.

Competition Format

The Chess Olympiad is an international level chess tournament that follows the Swiss-system format.
The Swiss-system is a non-eliminating format which features a particular number of competitions but not as many as in the round-robin tournament.
In the Swiss-system, every player doesn’t play with every player. The players are selected using a system wherein an opponent with a similar score is selected, but they do not face the same opponent more than once.
The player with the highest aggregate points earned in all the rounds is declared as the winner.
In the Swiss-system, every player competes in every round unless the total number of players in the competition is an odd number. This system is used when the number of competitors is large.
The first round is drawn at random or following the ratings or previous years’ performances.
Then the winners are selected to play the winners and the losers play the losers.
At the end of the last round, the players are ranked according to their scores.
