The Games has a tradition (similar to Olympics) of igniting a flame which is conveyed from Q'umarka, one of the ancient cultural Mayan centers, located in El Quiché, Guatemala to the host city.

The Central American Games are the Olympic Style multi-sport quadrennial event, following the year of Summer Olympics. The first edition of the games took place in 1973 in Guatemala City. The Central American Sports Organization (ORDECA) oversees the event for Central American countries. Total seven Central American countries participate in the Games. A total of ten editions have been held since the inception of the event.

Competition Format

The Games are open for participation by for member federations of the Central American Sports Organization (Spanish: Organización Deportiva Centroamericana) ORDECA in Central American countries. To participate in the event, athletes must be qualified by their National Olympic Committee.
Normally athletes /teams are required to compete in various rounds to become winner in each sport. The first, second, and third-place finishers (athletes or Team), in every event receive medals categorized as gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. A medal is awarded to all accredited players in the winning teams.
