The Aeroflot Open is an international level chess tournament, held in Moscow, Russia, every year. It is an open chess competition, sponsored by the airline company "Aeroflot". The event was first held in the year 2002. In the year 2013, the format of the competition was changed to rapid and blitz, following the Swiss system. The rapid and blitz events are normal games of chess with time constraints. They are forms of fast chess.
Competition Format
The tournament is open to all kind of chess players (amateurs as well as professionals).
Three open tournaments (A, B and C) are held according to the rating of the participants, followed by a Blitz tournament which is a nine-round Swiss System tournament.
The winner of this open tournament is invited to participate in the round-robin super tournament that is held in Dortmund. Tournament B is for players with a FIDE rating between 2550 and 2299. Tournament C is for the chess players with FIDE rating less than 2300.
If two players tie for the same place, then another Blitz game is played between the players to determine the winner.
