The World Athletics Championships is governed by World Athletics (formerly IAAF) and is a biennial athletics tournament. The World Championships began in 1976 after the men's 50-kilometre walk was dropped from the 1976 Montreal Olympics, despite the continued presence at the Olympics since 1932. The IAAF decided to host its World Championship competition a month and a half after the Olympics. It was the first World Championship that the IAAF had organized separately from the Olympic Games. At the beginning of the tournament, these championships were held every four years until 1991, when it changed from four years to a two-year cycle.
