UEFA Women's Championships

The UEFA European Women's Championship, popularly known as 'UEFA Women's Euro' is a women's football tournament, equivalent to the UEFA European Championship. It is unofficially known as 'European Cup'. The tournament is held every fourth year by UEFA in which various women's national football teams within the UEFA confederation participated. In 1982, a decision was taken by UEFA to launch a European Women’s Football Championship after which a qualification round would be held. The 1984 edition of the tournament was played in a two-legged format. Sweden won the tournament after defeating England at the penalty shootouts. During the 1980s, women’s football gained a lot of popularity in Europe. The 1987 edition of the championship was conducted in Norway. The host won the championship by 2-1 against Sweden. In the late 90s, there was an unprecedented surge in the popularity of women’s football and at the same time, UEFA gave the tournament the status of European Championship.
