Originally, it was contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League (or European Cup) and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup from 1972 to 1999. However, since the termination of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the Super Cup has been played between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, which was earlier known as UEFA Cup.

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual European club football tournament, organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Starting in mid-August during the commencement of the domestic season, the competition is contested by the winners of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Spanish football giant Real Madrid is the current champion of the competition as they won the title after routing fellow Spanish side Sevilla by 3-2 at 2016 final. The origin of the competition dates back to 1971; it is originally the brainchild of Anton Witkamp, a Dutch reporter and sports editor of the Dutch newspaper "De Telegraaf". The competition was planned as a decider of the best team in Europe. The first officially recognized Super Cup was played in 1973; Ajax won the championship defeating Milan by 6-1 in two-legged format.

Competition Format

The format of the UEFA Super Cup is simple and resembles most other club tournaments. The competition is a single match final, played at a neutral venue.
The winners of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League face off one another to contest for the trophy.
The match is played in 90 minutes, divided into two halves of 45 minutes known as halves.
In case any of the team fails to emerge as the clear winner at the end of 90 minutes, then two additional fifteen minutes periods are given.
If there is no clear winner even at the end of the extra time then the game proceeds to a penalty shootout.
In the case of bad weather or any disturbance, the match can be played the next day.
