One of the oldest tennis tournaments, Wimbledon is played on outdoor grass courts at Wimbledon, London, since 1877. It has been counted amongst the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (others being the Australian Open, US Open, and French Open). The inaugural championship held only Gentlemen's singles event. At present, the championship involves five major, junior and invitational events that are held every year. The event is much-publicized with the names as "The All England Lawn Tennis Championships", "Wimbledon" or "The Wimbledon Championships". From 1912 to 1924, the tournament was known as the "World Grass Court Championships". It is the only major tennis championship that is still played on grass. The championship has a unique place in the history of tennis for having numerous records.
