The Sudirman Cup competition was held for the first time in 1989 at Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta and was won by Indonesia.

The Sudirman Cup is an international mixed team championship, held in every two years. The championship was named after a former badminton player of Indonesian origin-Dick Sudirman who was also the establisher of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). The trophy of the Sudirman Cup is 80cm high and is carved in the shape of a shuttlecock on which crowns a magnificent replica of Borobudur Temple.

Competition Format

The Sudirman Cup does not have a qualification round.
The participating teams are divided into 7 groups on the basis of their performance.
The teams that are placed in Group I, have the scope of winning while the other groups play for promotions.
Earlier, the team that finished off at the last position in a group was brought down to the lower group (the last group being the exception). This system was however last used in the year 2009. Now the teams are grouped according to their world rankings.
The game is played according to the 21 points rally format. A toss is done before the game and the winning side can choose whether to serve or receive first or the side of the court where he wants to stand first.
A match is always considered the best of the three games played. The game is won by the side which first reaches the 21 point mark. When the score becomes 20 for both the competing teams then the side which acquires a lead by 2 points will be the one to win the match. But if the score for both the competing teams is 30, then the side which will score the 30th point first will win the match as 30 marks are the upper limit.
