The first tournament was held at Pinehurst golf resort and had been sponsored by the Diamondhead Corporation, the owner of the resort.

The PGA Cup is a golf competition for men, played between professional golfers of the United States team and the England and Ireland team. It is administered and governed by the British PGA and PGA of America, both. The winner is awarded the Llandudno Trophy. The competition was held annually until 1984 after which it has been started hosting in two years. The first competition was held 1973 in Pinehurst, North Carolina in the United States of America which was won by the USA.

Competition Format

The PGA Cup is contested between two teams, each comprising of 10 players.
It is played over a span of three days. The first two days hosts four foursome and four fourball matches.
Ten single matches are held on the last day.
The total points for the PGA Cup are 26.
All the matches have more than 18 holes. Initially, in 1973 and 1974 the PGA Cup was a two-day competition. In 1975, the span of the competition was stretched to three days. Since 1980, both the foursome and fourball competitions have been played on the first two days. The present format of the competition is as follows:

Day 1: 4 fourballs and 4 foursomes (in no particular order)
Day 2: 4 foursomes and fourballs (in no particular order)
Day 3 (final day): 10 single matches
