The tournament was held for the first time in 1975 in which around 275 teams participated.

The Gothia Cup is a youth football competition, held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The tournament is organised by the professional football club B.K. Häcken and is considered as one of the biggest tournaments in the world in terms of competing youth groups. Boys and girls of an average age limit (from 11 to 19 years) participate in it. The event is held in July, every year and the opening ceremony and finals of the Gothia Cup take place at Ullevi, Gothenburg. The concept of the Gothia Cup is now also expanding to China. A similar tournament is being started at Shenyang, China, which is named as the Gothia Cup China. This competition is based on the same concept as that of the first Gothia Cup. It is a youth meet, where all the young athletes come over to showcase their talent and love for the game.

Competition Format

Total 18 players are allowed in team amongst which 11 play and 7 serve as substitutes. The substitutions are made at the technical area or the center line.
The matches are played in accordance with the FIFA rules and Swedish F.A. rules.
A player of the same club is allowed to participate in several teams but not in the same age class.
