The competition is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar, also known as "Duleep".

The Duleep Trophy is an official first-class cricket tournament, founded by the Board of Cricket Council of India (BCCI). The tournament is played between teams representing the geographical zones of India. The first tournament was held in 1961 where the West Zone defeated South Zone in the finals by ten wickets. The North Zone and West Zone have dominated the tournament many times since its inception. Each zonal team consists of players who play in the Ranji Trophy from the respective state or city of that particular zone. The tournament also started allowing a foreign team to compete as a sixth team since 2003 and this practice ended up in the year 2008.

Competition Format

The original format was quite simple where five teams: North Zone, South Zone, Central Zone, East Zone, and West Zone played opposite each other on a knock-out basis.
From season 1993-1994, it was changed to a league format.
In the 2002-2003 season, five new teams replaced the zonal teams – Elite A, Elite B, and Elite C, and Plate A and Plate B. This new format was later on replaced by the original format as it was felt that the teams were lacking in identity. The final tournament consists of the group stages.
According to the last tournament played, three teams were selected by the BCCI that played the tournament in a Round-robin format.
The top two teams moved towards the final.
All the games were played with the Pink ball.
