It is one of the biggest annual international women’s football club championships, held in South America.

Due to the increasing interest of football amongst women, CONMEBOL organized Copa Libertadores Femenina in 2009 as another version of Copa Libertadores. The CONMEBOL committee decided that the first edition of Copa Libertadores Femenina would be played in Santos and Guarujá, Brazil in the month of October 2009. In 2009 & 2010, the tournament was played amongst ten teams. From every country of CONMEBOL, one team participated in the event. These ten teams have been divided into two groups.

Competition Format

According to the new format, all the teams are divided amongst three groups each having four, and matches are held within the groups in a round robin format.
The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals
The semifinals follow the single elimination rule where the loser of each bracket is immediately eliminated from the championship.
The winner of group A competes with the winner of group B, and the winner of group C competes with the best runner-up of the group phase.
The winners of the semifinals move on to the finals while the losers compete for the third place.
