CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores is a much-publicized international club football championship, held in South America. Founded in the year 1960, it is organized by the association of CONMEBOL. The tournament is designated so in honour of the Libertadores (Liberators, the heroes of South American Liberation), sponsored by multinational companies amongst which Bridgestone Corporation is the leading one. Hence, the competition is also known as CONMEBOL Libertadores Bridgestone. This game plays a very crucial role in South American’s culture. The award of the tournament is named as Copa Libertadores or La Copa. Alberto Spencer, Pedro Rocha, Fernando Morena, Julio Morales are some popular teams of this tournament.

Competition Format

There are many formats previously, which was followed in the competition but in the present format of the tournament, there are three stages.
The three stages are the first, second, and the knockout stage. Twelve teams appear in the first stage. From the first stage, six teams are selected who play the second stage with 26 teams.
In the second stage, there are eight groups which consist four teams in each.
A dual round-robin match is played among the groups. From here the eight winners and eight runners-up move to play the final four knockout stages.
The knock-out stage is followed by the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final. It ended with the final which held between June to August.
The winner of this tournament is automatically selected for The FIFA Club World Cup. The team who wins they are also qualified to play in Recopa Sudamericana.
