The 2005 Chess World Cup qualified ten players to move on to the Candidates Tournament of the 2007 World Chess Championship. The event was won by Levon Aronian (Armenian Grandmaster).

The Chess World Cup is the title given to a number of certified and recognized chess tournaments of the international stature. The formats of the tournaments have been subjected to multiple changes, over the years. The Grandmasters Association inaugurated and organized a series of six World Cup tournaments as "Grand Prix" event from 1988 to 1989. The first and the second Chess World Cups of FIDE were organized in the year 2000 and 2002, respectively. The Chess World Cup was used to be held annually until the year 2005, after which, it has been decided to be held in every two years.

Competition Format

The Chess World Cup allows 128 players to compete.
There are seven single-elimination rounds or "mini-matches" each consisting two games.
In case of a tie-break, Rapid and then Blitz formats are incorporated. The final round consists of 4 games, at the end of which the tiebreaker starts.
The tournament is a long one, stretching for over 26 days of successive games.
Two days are allowed to the players for resting: One day before the semi-final and one day before the finals.
Due to the event being stretched over a long period, players try and avoid tiebreakers and save on their energy.
The format of the tournament is often compared to a "lottery of survival".
