The Chess World Cup is the title given to a number of certified and recognized chess tournaments of the international stature. The formats of the tournaments have been subjected to multiple changes, over the years. The Grandmasters Association inaugurated and organized a series of six World Cup tournaments as "Grand Prix" event from 1988 to 1989. The first and the second Chess World Cups of FIDE were organized in the year 2000 and 2002, respectively. The Chess World Cup was used to be held annually until the year 2005, after which, it has been decided to be held in every two years.
