The Australian Ice Hockey League commenced after the discontinuation of the national level league.

The Australian Ice Hockey League abbreviated as AIHL, is one of the major ice hockey leagues in Australia, founded in 2000. It has been sanctioned by the Ice Hockey Australia which is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Most of the players of the Australian Ice Hockey League are amateurs. In the first season, the Australian Ice Hockey League comprised of three teams: Canberra Knights, Adelaide Avalanche and Sydney Bears. In the 2001 league, the Adelaide Avalanche came first after defeating the Sydney Bears by 10-7.

Competition Format

The Australian Ice Hockey League commences in mid April and lasts in September.
All the teams that take part in the AIHL, play each of their seven opponent teams in the league for four times for a total of 28 regular season games.
In AIHL, 3 points are awarded for winning a match and zero points for a loss. In the case of tie, the game goes to the shootout phase. Each shootout wins are of 2 points and losses are of 1 point. In season 2000 of the AIHL, the champion was that team that finished in the first in the standings at the end of each regular season. In 2001, AIHL introduced a championship game. The Goodall Cup was awarded to the champion of the championship game for the first time in the year 2002.
The semi-final matches and the final match remained as single game series. All the three games of the semi-finals and the final are played at the same venue.
The new AIHL or Australian Ice Hockey League Champions trophy was first presented in the year 2009 to the AIHL champion.
