Male and female athletes (jumpers) compete as individuals in long jump events.
The playing area of long jump includes a runway, a takeoff board and a sandpit which is the landing area. The runway is coated with the same rubberized surface as running tracks and must be no less than 40m long. The takeoff board which is around 8 inches wide is set back at least 1m from the front of the sandpit. A layer of plasticine is set immediately after the board to check whether the athlete’s foot was on the ground beyond the take-off limit. The landing area is a pit filled with sand which is around 9m long and 2.75m wide. The surface is smoothed over with a rake to the same level as the runway after every jump.
