Shooting became the part of the Modern Olympic games in 1896 with its first event at the Athens Olympic Games. On 17th July 1907; seven national shooting federations collaborated to establish the International Union of National Shooting Federations and Associations (L’Union Internationale des Fédérations et Associations nationals de Tir), and the respective meet is regarded as the first ISSF General Assembly. In 1920, the ISSF was re-established as L’Union Internationale de Tir (UIT).
Post the foundation of Pan American Games and Asian Games, shooting sport was accepted by both and in 1966, UIT decided to open the gates for female shooters to compete alongside male shooters. In 1984, Unni Nicolaysen became the first woman to be elected as the member of the Administrative Council. Soon shooting took its firm place at the international stage and with the beginning of the 21st century and on 17 July 2007; the Federation celebrated its 100th Anniversary with great hoopla.
