The captain of the national men's hockey team, Manpreet Singh, believes that India can reach the final of the Tokyo Olympics, as long as a sense of discipline and consistency is maintained in the period to the quadrangular extravaganza. Leaving behind a disappointing 2018 in which India crashed in the quarterfinals of the World Cup at home, Manpreet-led team has managed to maintain its consistency and qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics under a new Australian coach Graham Reid.
The previous year has been productive for the Indian hockey team in terms of performance despite not having enough opportunities to compete in high-level international tournaments. Looking back, 2019 has been very good for the hockey team, since they started the year in fifth place and managed to keep it. The most important goal for the hockey team in 2019 was to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. The meetings with the best teams like the Netherlands, the world champions Belgium and Australia in the next FIH Pro league will give the Indian team a fair idea of where the eight-time Olympic champions are.
According to Indian Hockey Captain Manpreet Singh "2019 has been productive for the hockey team in terms of performance and India has the calibre to reach at the final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and I think it is possible. But for that, we have to maintain the consistency we have demonstrated throughout 2019." This year, the entire nation has an eye on the Indian hockey team for the 2020 Olympics because the Indian hockey team has 1823 points with 5th Rank on the International Hockey Federation world rankings.
