Most Tug of War matches are finished in a best of three formats, and the goal is to beat the challengers and win the game by succeeding at least two of the three pulls in the match. Inside each pull, the goal is to win by pulling the resistance and the restriction's 4m marker towards the middle with the intent that the mark passes the centre line, bringing about success. It is unimaginable to expect to tie a Tug of War coordinate.
Each group has a mark on their finish of the rope 4m from the middle. The group who is pulled by the resistance towards the middle whose mark goes over the centre line is announced the loser. With matches regularly being the best of three, it is the team that effectively wins two out of three pulls that are proclaimed the champ.
