Trivia
-
On 8 June 2013 at 3:20 pm, the domed roof of the under-constructed building of the arena caught fire which was handled by forty fire fighters. The cause of fire was the welding work while building the roof.
Formerly known as
Scotland’s Indoor Arena, it a
multi-
purpose indoor arena, located within the
Scottish Event Campus. It has been named as
SSE after being sponsored by the
Scottish & Southern Energy subsidiary
Scottish Hydro. The arena has been exquisitely designed by the
London based architecture company
Foster + Partners. The arena opened its gate on
30th September 2013 and within a span of
three years, became the
eighth-busiest venue all around the world. Located at an arm’s length to
SEC Centre and the
SEC Armadillo, the arena has almost all the facilities to host global entertainment and sports events as well as major music concerts. The
Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre owns the arena.
Significance
- The arena has hosted the UFC’s first event in Scotland which was a hard nut to crack as there were no venues in the country at that time to host such a big event.
- The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony was held at the arena on 14th December 2014. The same year, it hosted the netball and gymnastic events of the Commonwealth Games.
- It has also witnessed the “Scotland Decides: The Big, Big Debate” which is spelled out as the largest televised debate in the history of Scotland.
- On 1st November 2015, the SSE arena hosted the Artistic gymnastics world championships.
