Ultra Running also known as ultramarathon is any race longer than the marathon distance (42.195km) and can run on athletics tracks, roads, dirt tracks or open terrains. These races are competed over two different types of race modalities including a fixed distance (like 50km, 100km, etc.) or a set time (like 6hr, 24hr or multi-day races). The sport can be traced back to two-million years when the Homo species evolved and started exploring. Today thousands of runners compete in several ultra-running events around the world.
The IAAF recognizes the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) as the global governing body of the sport.
To complete the race (whole distance) in the fastest time possible in distance-based events and to cover the greatest distance in the given time in time-based events.
