The stadium is owned by Superintendência de Desportos do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. The arena is regarded as one of the best arenas to host basketball matches. The architecture of this arena was by Rafael Galvão, Antônio Dias Carneiro, Orlando Azevedo and Pedro Bastos. After a span of six months of construction, the arena opened its door to host sports events on 24th September, 1954.
The Ginasio Gilberto Cardoso stadium was the venue for the final match of the FIVB Volleyball World League in 2015.

The stadium played host to FIBA Men's Basketball World's Championship in 1954 which was witnessed by 25,000 spectators. The arena hosted the championship again 1963.
